Here

To you, what is the meaning of home? The place you live in now or the place where you are from? Is it possible for people to feel a sense of belonging even though they are far away from home? Is distance something other than separation?

Distance  Longing  Belonging

Distance brings you closer to meeting a new world.
Technology cannot replace the body.

Project statement
The project, “Here” is about home and distance, where distance stands as the interval between two points, be it spatial, temporal or emotional. Even an inch or a second ago can signify a distance traveled, a distance lost or a distance gained. The project emerged from me feeling isolated from my culture and missing home. “Here,” works through emotional distances and crafts them into temporal manifestations of home. Distance is not a fixed thing. Nowadays we move and travel more frequently than in the past. We miss home, and that longing manifests in a desire to close the gaps or distances that separate us from our home, from our sense of belonging. Many technologies seek to bridge this gap, but none of them can replace the body. “Here” proposes a new view on distance, one that embraces it as a catalyst for change, for the opening up of new worlds, peoples, and places.

“Moving home,” Installation by “Here”

LAX Airport
(Los Angeles International Airport)
May 15th, 2018–August 15th, 2018

“Here” is thrilled to present “Moving home,” a site-specific installation at Lax Airport that incorporates travelers’ thoughts and memories about home as part of the work. People traveling to LA will be prompted to upload their thoughts on home prior to departure using the Here app. Upon arrival, they will be greeted by the messages they sent, which are now displayed as part of the installation in the form of text or sound. “Moving home” seeks to bring together questions of belonging and distance as constitutive of what we may understand as ‘home.’ It promotes a sense of wonder, the meeting of new worlds, while still tracing a sense of belonging from ‘home’ based on traveler’s data.

Share your thoughts or sound files which remind you of home.
